Method for Preparing the Recipient Site and Implanting Allogeneic Bone Grafts to the Jaws

Problem
The most time consuming and critical aspect of bone grafting procedures to the jaws is the adaptation of the bone graft to a deficient mandible. If there is poor adaptation, insufficient bony contact, or a lack of stability at the time of fixation, the graft will fail to fuse and the patient will not receive any benefit from the graft procedure.
 
Solution
The present invention improves the efficiency of allogeneic grafting by creating a standardized recipient site and utilizing standardized cylindrical blocks of allogeneic bone that matches the recipient site. It precludes the need for time consuming manipulation of the interface between the allogeneic bone block and the recipient site of the jaw. This standardization maximizes the area of contact at the interface between graft and host, and increases the efficiency of the procedure.
 
Competitive Advantage
Conventional allogeneic bone grafting to the jaws is a difficult surgical process that involves exposure of an area of the jaw that is deficient in bone volume, requiring adaptation of a bone block to the jaw, and fixation of this block. The present invention is an improved procedure in which the recipient site in the native jaw is manipulated rather than the allogeneic bone graft, and a graft of standard size is utilized instead of a manually contoured block of allogeneic bone. The efficiency and reduced complexity of the present invention may increase the number of jaw augmentation grafts performed by dental professionals.
 
Applications
The present technology can be used for efficient bone volume augmentation in preparation for dental implants.
 
Patent Status
International patent application entitled, "METHOD FOR PREPARING RECIPIENT SITE AND IMPLANTING ALLOGENEIC BONE GRAFT," was filed on February 20, 2009.

About the Inventors
Dr. Peleg is an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency, Oral Implantology Program, and Dental Implant research at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Peleg is the former Director of the Center for Dental Implants and Preprosthetic Surgery at the Haim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer Hospital in Israel. In 1990, he completed a fellowship in craniofacial trauma and reconstruction at the University of Bern, Inselspital, Switzerland, and from 1991 to 1993 completed a fellowship in tumor and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His research and publications in international journals include: bone reconstruction, P.R.P., sinus floor augmentation, and development of new techniques for nerve repositioning. Dr. Peleg is an active lecturer and moderator in advanced courses in the field of dental implant surgery.

Dr. Yoh Sawatari graduated from the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry in 1995. He then completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2004. After two years in private practice, Dr. Sawatari returned to the University of Miami as full time faculty for the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and has published on the relationship between bisphosphonates and bone. In addition, he has given multiple lectures on dental implants, local bone grafting, and has presented at the AAOMS national meeting regarding sinus lift bone grafts and dental implants.
