Corrosion Under Paint Detection
Xiangyang Zhou

Problem
Under-paint or under-coating corrosion inspection and detection are one of the major areas of corrosion engineering. Current methods commonly lack the resolution or sensitivity necessary to detect corrosion in microscopic pores or be awkward for inspecting surfaces with complex geometries or may cause damage to the surfaces to be examined.

Solution
An electrochemical system and method for corrosion detection that is light, compact, easy to use, and can detect corrosion underneath paint or a polymer or composite adherand surface.

Competitive Advantage
Sensor are light-weight and compact with dimensions on the order of several millimeters possible; (ii) Devices incorporating sensors are handheld; (iii) High sensitivity - the current prototype's signal to noise ratio is 100; (iv) Causes no damage to the surface to be detected; (v) Does not require paint removal; (vi) Can be used on irregular surface geometries; (vii) Low fabrication costs; (viii) Easy to use.

Patent Status
A PCT Application was filed May 29, 2009.

Licensing Opportunity
