Scalable General Synthesis of 1-Aza[n]helicenes (n>5) as well as their Derivatives and their Applications as Catalysts in Asymmetric Synthesis
Norito Takenaka and Robindro Sarangthem

Problem
1-aza[6]helicene compound is commercially available in milligram quantities and is very expensive. The present invention enables the gram-scale synthesis at significantly reduced costs.

Solution
The invention is a scalable general synthetic route to the class of 1-aza[n]helicenes (n e 5, n = the number of annellated aromatic rings) compounds that was developed in our laboratory and its scalability and generality were demonstrated with members of this class prepared in gram-scale. The key feature of our synthetic route is the rapid access to the common intermediate that can be easily derived to various 1-aza[n]helicenes.

Competitive Advantage
Presently, synthesis of 1-aza[n]helicenes (n>5) is limited to a microgram scale process that is not capable of providing the quantity of material necessary for commercial applications.

Applications
1-aza[n]helicenes can be used in engineering nonlinear optical materials, chiroptical switches, electrooptic switches, circularly polarized luminescent materials and medicinal chemistry.

Chiral catalyst precursors.

Catalysts in asymmetric synthesis.
